It was a given that Kim Gordon's new solo record would be cool. But Gordon's devastating cool has, in the past, occasionally come across as detached or so drop-dead as to seem bloodless. Not Play Me. It is pulsing, beating, so alive, so flushed. She sings with such passion, almost to the point of desperation ("Touch, touch me … Lead me on/ No, come back"), on the wonderful "GIRL WITH A LOOK," sighing and gasping, her voice catching until it's almost a chuckle. The music is a sunny swirl that commands: Volume up. Gordon is mesmerizingly manipulated on "NO HANDS," which has the motorik jitters. A churning, lurching Frankenstein of siren blasts and skronk, it's industrial but never cold. What a wonderful surprise the title track is—blissed out, jazzy, funk-kissed soul with feel-it-in-your-gut bass and drums; Gordon, sounding great, paints a hazy, smoky picture: "Rich popular girl/ Villain mode/ Jazz in background/ Chilling after work." Lyrically, much of the record is a commentary on world news. Big, bad and dangerous sounding, "BYEBYE25!" reinvents the song "BYEBYE" from her 2024 album, The Collective, doubling down on the heaviness to the point of brutality as Gordon rolls out a list of words that have become lightning rods for grant-seeking scientists under the Trump administration, like "Gulf of Mexico," "mental health," "bird flu," "victim." Restless, with a guitar loop that sounds like it's heaving, "SUBCON" targets billionaire dreams of colonizing space ("You want to go to Mars/ And then what?"). "POST EMPIRE" is sexy and slithering, as Gordon purrs the title; but, she has said, it's about the "offensive" algorithms that push and pull us. She skewers AI on cat-footed "DIRTY TECH," powered by ricocheting beats, and cyberpunky "BLACK OUT," which finds Gordon full-on rapping. Indeed, Play Me, produced by Justin Raisen (who has helmed all three of Gordon's solo albums), goes even deeper with the hip-hop exploration she charted on The Collective. "SQUARE JAW" goes to a doomy, distorted place and "BUSY BEE" is augmented by Dave Grohl's great big drums plus a sample of Gordon and Free Kitten bandmate Julia Cafritz from a circa-1994 MTV segment manipulated to sound like they're on helium.
