================================================================================ • Horsegirl • When Horsegirl first burst on the scene in 2022, the story revolved around the contrast of the band's youth and relative musical sophistication. Granted, it was a story worth highlighting: a trio of young women from Chicago who had honed their skills in programs like School of Rock and emerged from a scene that included another youthful labelmate (Lifeguard, whose drummer is siblings with Horsegirl's guitarist). Horsegirl's impressive debut, Versions of Modern Performance, nodded strongly at Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo and other '90s touchstones, wearing its heart on its sleeve and broadcasting those influences loud and proud.
On their latest record, Phonetics On and On, Horsegirl has expanded their palette, referencing bands like The Velvet Underground and The Clean, with nods to post-punk favorites like the Au Pairs and Raincoats, as well. They've mostly stepped away from the distortion pedal to focus on clean tones, which has allowed the band's vocals to flower and flourish. Their lilting harmonies recall another New Zealand band, the short-lived but much loved Look Blue Go Purple but the real touchstone here seems to be the under-appreciated U.K. band Electrelane, who also blasted off with some of the same influences found in Horsegirl's debut (and coincidentally recorded their acclaimed second album at the same Chicago studio).
Produced by Cate Le Bon, Phonetics On and On has a pensive beauty and breeziness to it which makes the record fly by. There's also high repeat play value—the songs stick and their deceptively simple instrumentation makes them easy earworms. But most impressive is how the still-young band managed to record an album full poppy bangers at an age when most of us were still embracing immaturity. © Fred Pessaro/Qobuz
