Over four albums, she has built a tuneful legacy as an honest observer of social and economic dynamics that are wrong or at least deserving of change. Working again with producer Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Hurray for the Riff Raff)—who helmed her last album, 2023's much-praised Anarchist Gospel—War returns with Armageddon In A Summer Dress. On the strength of her songwriting, War attracted some of her punk heroes to play on the album, including Steve Ignorant of Crass, who sings on the choruses of "Walking Contradiction." The stately dirge evangelizes a roll call of societal injustices, eventually concluding, "It's simply users and abusers, us and them, peace and war/ Ain't it funny how you don't see them as people anymore?"War also knows how to express hope, as in "Bad Times," where a full band is paced by an organ and in "Rise" where a steady bounce belies the feeling that "Your pain is simply fate" but finishes on an upward note: "Bad days/ Go and they come/ But the good do too my friend." "Cry Baby," featuring Valerie June, is R&B-esque and another punk rock legend, John Doe, sings backing vocals on "Gone Again," a downcast peek into a trapped psyche that spawned the album's title: "Under that smile's/ Just a mound of stress/ You're Armageddon/ In a summer dress." War's impressive fifth album closes with "Debbie Downer," where she pokes fun at the criticisms she hears about herself and her music: "You're a/ Negative Nancy/ A Debbie Downer/ You're perpetually antsy/ An infinite frowner." © Robert Baird/Qobuz
